What is an STL file?

An STL file is a file format used in many CAD/CAM/CAE programs. It is a triangular file format that represents objects in the form of a mesh of triangles, hence its name - Standard Triangulation Language.

The STL file was introduced in the 1980s by 3D Systems as a format for interchanging data between their CAD/CAM systems, and soon became a popular standard in the industrial sector. Currently, the STL file is supported by most CAD/CAM/CAE systems and 3D printers.

In an STL file, an object is represented by multiple triangles that cover its surface. The greater the number of triangles, the more accurate the model. An STL file can be used to represent both single objects and complex structures such as spatial models, machines, and tools.

One of the biggest advantages of an STL file is its versatility. It is a file format that can be used in many CAD/CAM/CAE systems, making it easy to exchange data between different applications. In addition, the STL file can be easily handled by most 3D printers, which makes it possible to create prototypes and models in 3D.

One of the limitations of an STL file is that it is not able to store information about other properties of an object, such as color or surface texture. In addition, because an STL file is created from a grid of triangles, it does not always accurately reflect the original model.

To sum up, the STL file is a popular and universal file format used in many CAD/CAM/CAE systems and in the 3D printer. Although it has some limitations, its advantages – such as versatility, ease of use and the ability to create prototypes – make it a very useful tool in designing and manufacturing products in three dimensions.

ActCAD is a modern CAD software for 2D drawing and 3D modeling as well as working with BIM objects based on the latest solutions of the IntelliCAD Technology Consortium.
Intelli CAD is a CAD software engine developed by the US-based IntelliCAD Technology Consortium (ITC), a consortium founded in 1999 and operating as a non-profit organization.
Special Interest Groups (SIGs) within ITC develop modules for CAD, BIM, DGN, Mobile, UI, etc. The IntelliCAD team professionally carries out the processes of CAD BIM software development, product testing, and constantly supports and improves the quality systems and products of the ITC Consortium members. ITC members work in different locations around the world and contribute to the development of technology in a cooperative way. The aim of this joint initiative is to provide technological support for software and service development to all ITC members worldwide. ActCAD 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 products are based on the successive development versions of the IntelliCAD engine, such as 6.6, 8.0, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 9.0, 9.1, 9.2, 9.2a, 10, 10.0a, and 10.1, 10.1a, 11, 11.1, 12, 12.1, and IntelliCAD 13
