CAD File Format | DWG File

The name of the format is an abbreviation of the English word "Drawing". DWG File is a binary file format used to store CAD design data for 2D and 3D graphics. DWG files contain Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings consisting of vector data and metadata saved and compiled using binary encoding. DWG is the native format of most CAD applications, especially AutoCAD, and alternative applications such as IntelliCAD (ActCAD, ZwCAD, ProgeCAD, CMS IntelliCAD), Gstarcad, and Draftsight. This format was developed in the 1970s by AutoDesk for the needs of AutoCAD software. DWG is a closed format, using it in the Autodesk version requires a license. Instead, it is widely available through a version developed by the Open Design Alliance and used by almost all alternative CAD software. The Autodesk format has adopted as a CAD standard and is widely used by architects, designers, constructors, engineers or surveyors in many for various design purposes. ActCAD software is fully compatible with the dwg format. ActCAD allows you to view the opened drawings in preview mode on the application start page.

How to open DWG files in ActCAD

1. Install and run any ActCAD application
2. Then, from the program's menu, select File > Open
3. Search for the DWG document you want to open
4. Select a file or files with extensions in dwg format
5. You can view the file, edit and save the results of your work in this file format
6. If you want, you can choose any other CAD file format supported by ActCAD, e.g. DXF, DGN, DWT, DWS, DWF, STEP, STL, IGES, DSF to save the results of your work!!
7. You can also save your design or drawing in an older version of the format to share with owners of older CAD applications.
